Video creation — the evergreen money pit

· Carl W. Irving

Generating decent-quality video content (e.g., for YouTube) is a definite test of one’s priorities… “Decent” these days means 4K footage with some lighting and a good quality mic. The storage and processing requirements aren’t trivial. Now I see why people get excited every year when the new macs come out. For a developer, the speed ramp is a gentle slope. For video professionals, it is a steeper slope (at significant cost!).

I do wonder how many small creators actually archive their projects? It seems like the archival storage needs could get really expensive really fast. Maybe most people don’t care and just discard the intermediate files? To be fair, there isn’t a ton of incentive for normal people to revisit past projects. So, maybe the answer is to be realistic about priorities and treat this stuff more as throwaway artifacts. Just keep the final video in case something bad happens with the hosting provider…
