"Alternative," really?

iOS 5 upgrade day: oh, what an epic pain in the rear!

While iOS 5 does seem to be pretty darned awesome (and run surprisingly well on even our iPhone 3GS phones), the upgrade in an Apple-infested household is pretty tedious: All the Macs need to upgrade to OS X 10.7.2 to work with iCloud, the Mobile Me accounts need to be converted to iCloud, each of the iOS devices upgraded one at a time -- which takes forever (this is a major update: it backs up the device, wipes it, installs the new OS, restores the backup, then the content), especially when there is 32GB of crap on each phone...

The new features also take a bunch of configuration -- especially when you have multiple Apple IDs (e.g., one for the family app purchases plus separate ones for each person's iCloud sync data), but I have to say that I'm really impressed with the end result... It just takes a lot of work getting there!
